UPDATE 9/18/2022: Confirmed he’s headed to UMass.
9/15/2022 – Lulea, Sweden newspaper Norrbottens-Kuriren reports in an interview with Locmelis that he is probably headed to the US following this season.
Following his draft this summer by the Bruins, and his participation with Latvia at the World Juniors in Edmonton, word was circulating that he would leave Lulea J20 and play this season with Youngstown in the USHL. While that turned out to be wrong there was also a report that he would return to Lulea this year but attend college (Northern Michigan) in the US next year.
Although the above linked story is behind a paywall, Swedish outlet Hockey Sverige has reported on that report.
Still with us? LOL. The translation includes quotes from Locmelis saying that he is seriously considering UMass in Amherst, Massachusetts. “They (Lulea) have a good team, and I will probably only get to play in the fourth (line) if I choose to stay here in Luleå. I think it would have been better for me to play in one of the first two (lines) in a university team, …”
Stay tuned.
